TL;DR
Welcome to Toronto Knitters Guild Season 2026-27. It’s time to renew memberships and look at TKG’s Calendar. In this month’s letter, I wax poetic about what October means to me as a knitter/crocheter, and recap TKG’s previous month.
Welcome TKG Members – October 2026
Month #1 of TKG Season 2026-27! Our guild’s season has officially started. I am so glad you are a part of the Toronto Knitters Guild. October is the beginning of knitting season, filling me with an uncontrollable yearning to pick up yarn and make all the things. The temperatures are dropping, the days are shortening, and my familiar autumn ritual begins. I draw inspiration from the sidelines as other yarn-lovers share their seasonal rituals: “Mystery” Knit-a-Longs (MKALs), annual pilgrimages to fibre festivals/retreats, swapping out summer wardrobes for warm-cozy handmade treasures, reacquainting one’s self with last season’s unfinished Works-in-Progress (WIPs), and/or failing to suppress one’s primal winter-survival instincts of obsessing, scheming, purchasing, hoarding, and stashing as much yarn as can be stashed. Many of us will be planning and participating in gift-knitting, charitable knitting, and social knitting/crochet community activities. It is a time to re-connect with those who enjoy and appreciate making things with yarn and sticks. AND… It is time to renew your TKG membership if you haven’t done so already. September Recap
September 2026 was the final month for TKG Season 2025-26. The member meeting was held on Wednesday September 16, 2026 in-person/online at Cameron Hall (livestreamed). If you missed it, don’t worry. All of our member meetings can be accessed through the membership hub at this link: (https://torontoknittersguild.ca/membership-hub/meeting-videos/)
Attendance between in-person vs online was divided almost equally at ~50 ppl for a total of approximately 100 members. Our meeting started with announcements including the sad news that long-time TKG member, Margaret Bryant, passed away. Donations in memory of Margaret can be made to Princess Margaret Cancer Center (https://thepmcf.ca/ways-to-give/memory/).
Our speaker, Claudia Joyal Laplante of Clo Tricots, joined us via Zoom from her studio in Quebec. This was TKG’s first attempt at having a “virtual” guest at an “in-person” event. We all watched Claudia on the screen, interacting with Claudia through the sound/camera system in Cameron Hall. There were a couple short-lived technical issues, resolved quickly thanks to Cameron Hall’s “calm-under-pressure” David King, who performed miracles to get the meeting back on track. Claudia’s topic was a showcase of Canadian Designers, some well-known, some less known. During the 10-minute break, when talking with attendees, there were many new project ideas taking shape, whether attendees were jotting notes in a journal, typing into a phone, taking photographs of the preso slides, or going directly to ravelry, buying the pattern and adding it to their queue. Others commented how they would love this topic again next year grouping Canadian Designers by regions, styles, etc. Everyone I spoke to was pleased with the diversity of designers and new-to-them patterns. Everyone had at least one new discovery, “I didn’t know they were Canadian” or “I have never heard of them…!!” Claudia was generous with her time, answering questions about teaching, YouTube content creation, recommendations for specific designs, and “must-visit” yarn shops in Montreal. We ended the evening with Fresh Off the Needles projects from Karen Beutler, Jennifer Tran, and Janelle Taylor.
September Knit Night was on Tuesday the 27th. There was a convivial group of Knit Night “regulars” and several newcomers. Projects were shared, advice was requested and given, and a good time was had by all. The Knit Night sponsor was Waypoint Fibreworks, a newcomer to the “indie yarn” scene and a first-time TKG sponsor. Mary showed off her plant-based yarns in a variety of colours with several swatches and samples in both knit and crochet.
