November – Kyle Vey

Speaker:  Kyle Vey of Vectorknits

Although a native of Toronto, Kyle grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. He studied biomedical and mechanical engineering at North Carolina State University, and upon graduation, moved back to Toronto to work in technology consulting. He began knitting just under three years ago when taught by his mother. After a year and a half, he began exploring design, drawing inspiration from geometry, nature, and the world around him. His signature piece, Wingspan, combines these elements, using key textural features to replicate the look of feathers radiating out along the wings of a bird. In addition to his life as a designer, he is currently pursuing his MBA at the University of Toronto, concentrating in sustainability, business design, innovation, and leadership. He does not yet know what he would like to do professionally when he graduates next June.

Kyle will talk about his journey as a designer thus far. The past year has been quite the adventure, from experimenting small with colour and texture in Parallelism, all the way up to the excitement around Wingspan, a pattern that went viral almost overnight. Kyle learned a lot during this process, and is still figuring things out as he goes. Kyle will speak about that experience, the ups and downs, and where things are headed in the future.
