October Guild Meeting – Saltwater Socks Book Launch with Shirley A. Scott and Christine LeGrow

October 19, 2022 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Saltwater Socks Book Launch
Speakers: Shirley A. Scott and Christine LeGrow

Beloved Canadian authors & knitwear designers Christine LeGrow and Shirley A. Scott will join us to celebrate their newest book. With Saltwater Socks, fourth in the Saltwater Knits series, readers will find
designs inspired by Newfoundland’s traditional knitting patterns and highlighting the island’s culture through innovative photography, anecdotes, and stories.

This eagerly awaited volume focuses on family socks that promise to amaze, from delicate Nighty Night Sleep Socks to sturdy Bell Island Tickle Vamps and iconic Puffin and Whale play socks for youngsters. Coordinating hats, gloves and fingerless mittens rooted in traditional design complete this exploration of contemporary Atlantic outdoor style. Detailed instructions and lavish photographs will appeal to readers and knitters of all ages and abilities.

Hailed as “a bewitching mixture of craft, gift and culture,” the Saltwater Knits series won the 2021 Atlantic Canada Craft Award for Excellence in Product Design. Vogue Knitting described the series as ‘elegant,’ while noting the outstanding quality and creativity of the books. Saltwater Mittens is a Canadian bestseller and won the 2019 Best Atlantic Published Book Award. It was followed by Saltwater Classics, and Saltwater Gifts.

Shirley A. Scott, sometimes known as Shirl the Purl, has been writing about knitting, designing knitwear, and publishing patterns for many years. She is the author of Canada Knits: Craft and Comfort in a Northern Land. A Newfoundlander by choice, her creative life has flourished in her adopted home. Christine LeGrow is the owner of Spindrift Handknits of St. John’s, Newfoundland, and is also a talented photographer. Shirley and Christine have together collected and studied traditional knitting patterns and techniques from across Newfoundland for the past 40 years.
