SUMMARY:February - Virtual Show & Share
DESCRIPTION:February is the month of love & togetherness\, and in that spirit\, we’re opening up the meeting and running our first Virtual Show & Share.  Show us what you have finished over the last few months.  We have such a wealth of talent and creativity in our guild and we love to see each’s other’s projects.  This isn’t a fashion show or a photo contest\, just a fun way to share and connect with each other. \nHere are the details:  \nSend a jpeg of your project to cheryldeville6@gmail.com If possible\, taking the photo outdoors in natural light will ensure a good picture\, with details easily seen. A photo on your balcony or front step will work just fine\, no need to stress the location! \nAdd a couple of sentences describing your project.  Pattern name\, yarn used is always helpful.  What you love about it / why you made it / was it a good experience / techniques used\, etc. \nSubmission Deadline Feb. 8 or earlier.  We need the photos to create the presentation well ahead of the meeting. \nImportant to Note:  this meeting will be recorded\, so if you’d prefer not to have your name posted\, please let us know ahead of time.  We will happily accommodate you.  We can use your first name only\, or you may remain anonymous.

SUMMARY:October - Kate Atherley & Kim McBrien Evans
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kim McBrien Evans & Kate Atherley \n. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .\nRegistration required: Please register in advance for this webinar. This meeting is open to guests free of charge.\nOnce you have registered\, you will receive the Zoom meeting link via email.\n. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . \nJoin Kate Atherley and Kim McBrien Evans for a deep dive tour of their new book\, Custom Shawls for the Curious and Creative Knitter. Kim and Kate will give an overview of the elements of the book\, how they used these elements in building the beautiful shawl patterns in the book\, and what’s on their needles a year after writing it. Through learning about how both Kate and Kim approach shawl design\, you’ll get tips for creating your own amazing shawls through this book. \nKim’s Bio: \nCuriosity and exploration and an ever-expanding plan for world domination are the name of the game for knitwear designer and indie hand dyer\, Kim McBrien Evans. A lifelong love of colour\, texture\, and pattern prompted Kim to transition from working artist to textile maven. Her knitwear designs are known for their ability to turn an abstract idea into a textile reality while simultaneously fitting and flattering every body. She lives and works in the woods of Central Ontario. \n\n \n \nKate’s Bio: \nKate is Knitty.com’s Managing Technical Editor\, and a seasoned designer and teacher of all things knitterly. \nHer latest book\, The Knitter’s Dictionary\, is an easy-to-use and friendly guide to the language of knitting. A reference book and a guide to pattern reading all in one\, it covers topics from Gauge to Yarn Barf. It received a starred review in Publisher’s Weekly. \n‘Knit Mitts: Your Hand-y Guide to Knitting Mittens and Gloves’\, released in fall 2017\, brings the same any-size-any-gauge approach as used in Custom Socks to hand coverings of all kinds. The first printing sold out in record time. \n‘Custom Socks: Knit to Fit Your Feet’ was released summer 2015 by Interweave Press\, to great acclaim. It takes a different approach than many sock books\, teaching you how to measure your feet and providing numbers for working both toe-up and top down socks for 12 sizes and 9 gauges. \nHer ‘Pattern Writing for Knit Designers’ book is the industry’s first guide specifically written to help knit designers (and teachers) of all levels create easy-to-follow\, high quality knitting patterns. It’s been called a “game-changer” and a “must-have” by designers and magazine editors. \nShe’s known for her attention to detail in her patterns and her classes\, and she regularly teaches at stores and events across North America\, including Interweave YarnFest and Vogue Knitting Live. Her work has appeared in many books and magazines. \nKate lives in Toronto with her husband and their adorable but sometimes challenging rescue dog Dexter.

SUMMARY:December - Christopher Walker
DESCRIPTION:Speaker:  Christopher Walker of  cabinboyknits \nA History of Knitting in Canada \nChristopher Walker is a natural yarn dyer\, fibre artist and founder of the label cabinboyknits. Outside of the corporate world\, Christopher splits his time between Toronto and his pre-confederation log cabin in Stirling Ontario. His unconventional work is influenced by the environment around him\, whether it be from the rugged Canadian landscape\, or the vivid colours and graphic designs in Toronto’s tattoo parlours. His work profiles the dichotomy between masculinity and the soft intricate work of knitwear\, and has been featured on the runway and at art gallery showings. He frequently teaches knitting and yarn dyeing classes at festivals and at his log cabin. \nHe will be presenting a talk on the History of Canadian Knitting. He has delivered this lecture in Canada and Europe. In this lecture\, Christopher discusses the first evidence of knitting in Canada\, the influence of Europeans on knitting in our country and a variety of specific knitting techniques on the East and West coasts. This whirlwind tour of our Canadian knitting heritage will also include discussion of men in knitting and the impact of the World Wars. Finally\, Christopher talks about some of our country’s most prominent knitting companies as well as the current state of knitting\, popular Canadian brands\, Canadian designers\, Canadian Mills\, as well as popular Canadian fibre. \n \n \nVendor:  cabinboyknits \nChristopher will be selling a lovely selection of his naturally dyed yarn at the meeting. Payment may be made with cash or credit card. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:November - Kyle Vey
DESCRIPTION:Speaker:  Kyle Vey of Vectorknits  \nAlthough a native of Toronto\, Kyle grew up in Raleigh\, North Carolina. He studied biomedical and mechanical engineering at North Carolina State University\, and upon graduation\, moved back to Toronto to work in technology consulting. He began knitting just under three years ago when taught by his mother. After a year and a half\, he began exploring design\, drawing inspiration from geometry\, nature\, and the world around him. His signature piece\, Wingspan\, combines these elements\, using key textural features to replicate the look of feathers radiating out along the wings of a bird. In addition to his life as a designer\, he is currently pursuing his MBA at the University of Toronto\, concentrating in sustainability\, business design\, innovation\, and leadership. He does not yet know what he would like to do professionally when he graduates next June. \nKyle will talk about his journey as a designer thus far. The past year has been quite the adventure\, from experimenting small with colour and texture in Parallelism\, all the way up to the excitement around Wingspan\, a pattern that went viral almost overnight. Kyle learned a lot during this process\, and is still figuring things out as he goes. Kyle will speak about that experience\, the ups and downs\, and where things are headed in the future. \nVectorknits \n  \nVectorknits \n \nVendor:  Yarn Indulgences
