SUMMARY:September Guild Meeting: Sally Melville "My Life in Knitting"
DESCRIPTION:As we head into the final quarter of our 25 th year as a guild\, please join us and welcome Knitwear\nDesigner Sally Melville. Sally was the first speaker at the first TKG guild meeting 25 years ago. Sally will\npresent a new lecture called My Life in Knitting: unplanned and unexpected. \nMY LIFE IN KNITTING: unplanned and unexpected \nThrough mistakes and misadventures\, Sally found herself with a life she could not have predicted or anticipated. This talk is very personal and tells the tales of these events\, the motivation to overcome sometimes questionable choices\, and the life lessons learned over 65 years of knitting. \nSally will also launch Fine Yarn Dive\, the pattern she has designed to celebrate the Toronto Knitters Guild 25 th Anniversary. TKG members can enjoy a 25% discount using the code KW/TOknitters to purchase the pattern on Ravelry. Start shopping your stash or visit the numerous yarn festivals in your area to plan this lovely sweater. \n  \nAbout Sally \nBefore the DKC (Downtown Knit Collective)\, there was the K-W Knitters’ Guild\, established by Sally Melville and friends. Toronto knitters would come to K-W for events until they decided to establish a guild of their own. Sally was honoured to be invited as their first guest speaker. For 10 subsequent years—until her move to Ottawa in 2008—she was invited to come once a year and speak. It was always a joy to re-establish her connection with her knitting friends in Toronto. \nOver the 40 years of Sally’s knitting career\, she wrote seven knitting books—including The Knit Stitch (which sold 300\,000 copies) and her last and favourite book\, Knitting Pattern Essentials. She also taught extensively\, which took her around the world (and to Denver where she put much of her teaching expertise onto the Craftsy platform). Sally retired in 2019\, although she still puts the occasional pattern on Ravelry. \nCURRENT ACTIVITIES\nThe Pandemic certainly afforded opportunities to knit—and Sally did her share\, including an iconic piece she is wanting to show the Toronto knitters. But after 1000 face masks and scrub caps\, she re-discovered a long-lost love of sewing and so is in the process of her 17th “covid quilt!”

SUMMARY:June - BiStitchual Yarn Shop: Pride Month
DESCRIPTION:John and Kelsi\, co-founders of BiStitchual Yarn Shop and the BiStitchual podcast. \nToronto\, ON \nhttps://bistitchual.ca/ \nBiStitchual began as a queer\, Canadian crafty podcast in June 2020. We started this podcast to talk more about queerness\, mental health\, and disability\, both in the fibre arts community and the world at large. We wanted to build a community that would not only embrace\, but celebrate\, uplift\, and connect with folks who recognize and relate to these identities and intersections. As the podcast grew in popularity and we began to foster an online community\, we realized – what better way to celebrate and uplift queer and Canadian fibre artists than through a yarn store! \nThrough a series of serendipitous events\, we were able to find a home in the beautiful Baby Point Gates neighbourhood in Toronto’s west end. It took weeks of blood\, sweat\, tears\, and many pots of coffee\, but we were thrilled to open our doors in November 2020. \nOur mission is to make Canadian and queer indie dyers and makers more accessible to the world\, so along with our brick-and-mortar shop\, we have this webstore that ships internationally! We have also partnered with the Flamingo Market\, Canada’s preeminent market of LGBTQIA+ artisans and markers\, in order to promote and foster the talents of this incredible community. \nJohn is a bi\, trans\, gender apathetic former cafe manager living in the west end of Toronto with what some might consider too many books and too much yarn. John has been crocheting and knitting since late 2013\, and\, until recently\, looked to it as a way to destress and unwind from the constant headaches of working as management in the food service industry. John loves making amigurumi and finding ways to incorporate a little bit of pride into every project. \n \nKelsi is a queer\, disabled knitter\, living in a hobbit hole in Toronto with ever-brewing coffee\, a mountain of books\, and a dragon’s hoard of yarn. She rediscovered her love of knitting while searching for coping mechanisms to help manage her mental health and hasn’t put down her needles since. She runs Knit Me\, a subscription box and venue for beginner learning kits\, as a way to help mitigate as many potential accessibility barriers as she can. \n  \nMeetings are open to members. Find out about membership \nThis meeting will be a zoom webinar.\nNote that you must be a member to have access to the Zoom meeting link and to join the presentation. \n

SUMMARY:October - Erlbacher Knitting Machines: Shop Tour and Demos
DESCRIPTION:Erlbacher Knitting Machines – Cape Girardeau\, Missouri                                       \nA Shop Tour and Demos        \nhttps://erlbacherknitting.com/           \n  David “PeeWee” Erlbacher was a fourth generation machinist. He started his own machine shop in 1960 making race car parts. As the machining business changed over the years\, the parts got larger and larger. Erlbacher Gear and Machine Works is primarily a gear shop\, however\, with CNC mills and lathes\, it has become a full-service precision machine shop. Upon seeing a vintage CSM\, PeeWee’s interest was piqued. He knew he would be able to reverse engineer the Gearhart CSM. With the help of other Gearhart mechanics and enthusiasts (and with a lot of thought\, headaches\, and mistakes) he finally did it. A lifetime in a machine shop and he has said\, “The Gearhart CSM has been one of the most difficult things we have ever made in the shop.” This is quite a compliment to the machinists of the original product. \nClear here to join on Zoom

SUMMARY:October - Kate Atherley & Kim McBrien Evans
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kim McBrien Evans & Kate Atherley \n. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .\nRegistration required: Please register in advance for this webinar. This meeting is open to guests free of charge.\nOnce you have registered\, you will receive the Zoom meeting link via email.\n. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . \nJoin Kate Atherley and Kim McBrien Evans for a deep dive tour of their new book\, Custom Shawls for the Curious and Creative Knitter. Kim and Kate will give an overview of the elements of the book\, how they used these elements in building the beautiful shawl patterns in the book\, and what’s on their needles a year after writing it. Through learning about how both Kate and Kim approach shawl design\, you’ll get tips for creating your own amazing shawls through this book. \nKim’s Bio: \nCuriosity and exploration and an ever-expanding plan for world domination are the name of the game for knitwear designer and indie hand dyer\, Kim McBrien Evans. A lifelong love of colour\, texture\, and pattern prompted Kim to transition from working artist to textile maven. Her knitwear designs are known for their ability to turn an abstract idea into a textile reality while simultaneously fitting and flattering every body. She lives and works in the woods of Central Ontario. \n\n \n \nKate’s Bio: \nKate is Knitty.com’s Managing Technical Editor\, and a seasoned designer and teacher of all things knitterly. \nHer latest book\, The Knitter’s Dictionary\, is an easy-to-use and friendly guide to the language of knitting. A reference book and a guide to pattern reading all in one\, it covers topics from Gauge to Yarn Barf. It received a starred review in Publisher’s Weekly. \n‘Knit Mitts: Your Hand-y Guide to Knitting Mittens and Gloves’\, released in fall 2017\, brings the same any-size-any-gauge approach as used in Custom Socks to hand coverings of all kinds. The first printing sold out in record time. \n‘Custom Socks: Knit to Fit Your Feet’ was released summer 2015 by Interweave Press\, to great acclaim. It takes a different approach than many sock books\, teaching you how to measure your feet and providing numbers for working both toe-up and top down socks for 12 sizes and 9 gauges. \nHer ‘Pattern Writing for Knit Designers’ book is the industry’s first guide specifically written to help knit designers (and teachers) of all levels create easy-to-follow\, high quality knitting patterns. It’s been called a “game-changer” and a “must-have” by designers and magazine editors. \nShe’s known for her attention to detail in her patterns and her classes\, and she regularly teaches at stores and events across North America\, including Interweave YarnFest and Vogue Knitting Live. Her work has appeared in many books and magazines. \nKate lives in Toronto with her husband and their adorable but sometimes challenging rescue dog Dexter.
