April – Fiona Ellis

HOSIERY HISTORY — When a fashion trend debuts it can be shocking or at least unsettling to the common view of what constitutes appropriate attire. If however, the look in question resonates with the contemporary thinking, the trend becomes acceptable and widely adopted. Take tights for example. A glimpse of stocking was once, as Cole Porter so aptly put it, “simply shocking” but now we take the sight of Lycra-sheathed leg in stride. Fiona takes us through the history of stockings step by step.

Fiona Ellis graduated from DeMontfort University (England) with a degree in fashion knitwear design in 1993. Her work appears in leading magazine publications including on-line at Twist Collective, and in yarn pattern booklets. She is the Designer in Residence at Web’s Yarns throughout 2015.
She has produced original concepts for major fashion houses in London, Paris and New York. She is the author of Inspired Cable Knits, Knitspiration Journal and Inspired Fair Isle Knits.
